Facilitating Community Empowerment

Community empowerment takes place when local residents participate in dialogue and activities regarding the well-being of their community. It can take place within communities, with local people and community groups working together to better understand each others' needs and then finding and implementing solutions to issues raised, for example, community projects that make a difference to the life of residents. Community empowerment is also increasingly used to strengthen the links between communities and wider statutory partners, for instance local government and public service agencies.
Effective community empowerment helps to make sure that:
- Public services reflect and respond to the views and concerns of local people,
- People within a community feel involved in and are responsible for improving their quality of life, and
- Solutions work over the long term.
At Cambridgeshire ACRE we recognise the significant opportunities there are for communities to taking more control over their own well-being. Our team of community development workers support communities with all kinds of community-led action. Our programmes of work are designed to give people a voice in commenting on local strategies, policies and services.
