Financial support for village halls during the COVID-19 pandemic

15 April 2020

Is your village hall or community building getting the financial support it is entitled to during the COVID-19 pandemic?

Most village and community halls should be eligible for 100% business rate relief in 2020/21 through the Expanded Retail Discount, which is available to places of public assembly. All local authorities are working on issuing revised bills showing the correct relief entitlement, there is no need to make a claim.

One-off Retail, Hospitality and Leisure Grants (RHLG) are available for businesses in the retail, hospitality or leisure sector including community buildings.

The Grant is:
* £10,000 for premises with a rateable value up to £15,000, or
* £25,000 for premises with a rateable value over £15,000 and less than £51,000. If your premises has a rateable value of £51,000 or over then you are not eligible for this scheme.

If you are not sure how to find out the rateable value of your building, please contact us. To access the grant, you will need to complete and return the application form your local (rating) authority sends to you.

Please note that church halls are ineligible, as are halls run by Parish and Town Councils (unless the council is sole trustee of a charitable hall)

Local authorities are issuing guidance on their websites, so check with your relevant district council for advice regarding COVID-19 business support.
