If you manage a small voluntary or community sector organisation then running monthly payroll for your employees can be quite a responsibility.

If you are an employer of staff then you are legally obliged to:

• Register as an employer with HM Revenue & Customs.
• Give employees a record of their payments and deductions.
• Deduct tax and National Insurance Contributions from employees whose earnings are equal to, or more than, the Lower Earnings Limit.
• Pay to HM Revenue & Customs the Tax and National Insurance contributions deducted from your employees.
• Set up and maintain adequate payroll records.
• Make annual returns.
• Make statutory payments to employees where appropriate.
