Cambridgeshire ACRE and the Middle Level Commissioners have partnered together to create a short film on the topic of Floating Pennywort, and how we can work together to stop the potential spread of it. You can watch it by scrolling to the bottom of this article and clicking the link.
Floating Pennywort, or Hydrocotyle Ranunculoides, is a non-native, invasive, aquatic plant that forms dense mats of rounded, green leaves across water surfaces. Its mostly found on lakes, ponds and other water-based habitats. It causes a range of problems, including:
- Changing the availability of oxygen in waters
- Threatening fish and invertebrates
- Choking and therefore blocking drainage systems
- Crowding native water plants that pose little threat in waterways
This plant is extremely difficult to control due to its rapid growth rates (up to 20cm per day). Regular maintenance of the plant can prevent its dominance in the waterways.

Various members of organisations around Cambridgeshire have voiced their concern on our short film. We are hoping it provides a short, yet concise explanation of what Floating Pennywort is, and how you can help stop its spread.
