During her Christmas speech, Her Majesty the Queen spoke of her wish that her Platinum Jubilee year should be ”an opportunity for people everywhere to enjoy a sense of togetherness.”
On the eve of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations, we congratulate Her Majesty on her historic reign and wish all our Cambridgeshire communities well with their own celebrations.
We have heard from many communities across Cambridgeshire of the very different ways they are commemorating the occasion – from street decorations, street parties, concerts and tea dancing, to tree planting, beacon lighting, new village seats, signs and noticeboards. Each community’s plans are different from their neighbour’s, but they all share the same aim of bringing people together to celebrate this momentous occasion.
Our own hope is that this special occasion will mark the start of a period of community renewal, with people emerging from their homes, post-COVID, to celebrate and spend time together, trying new activities and forging new friendships.
Above all, we hope that communities start to feel a sense of optimism for greater self-organisation and community leadership from these new friendships and community connections.
Today also marks the start of Volunteers’ Week 2022 and so we also wish to highlight the importance of volunteering and organising at a community level. Many Jubilee events will have been organised in their entirety by volunteers and our communities would be a poorer place without their efforts. Thank you all.
