Wisbech CLLD - Leading place-based working
Discover how we support community-based projects in Wisbech to help people move towards employment.
About the project
This work has been made possible thanks to funding from the European Social Fund (ESF) as part of the 2014-2020 European Structural and Investment Funds Growth Programme in England. The Department for Work and Pensions is the Managing Authority for the England ESF programme. Established by the European Union, ESF funds help local areas stimulate their economic development by investing in projects which will support innovation, businesses, skills development, job creation, social inclusion and local community regeneration.
Why is this needed?
Cambridgeshire ACRE has for over two decades led an approach to place-based economic development that is delivered through community action. Community Led Local Development (CLLD) is a way of supporting local development projects using structural funds from Europe. It aims to increase employment and skills and social enterprise and ensures that local people are involved in developing projects, using resources in the area to address local challenges.
Community-led Local Development must be community led by a Local Action Groups (LAG) comprising of local stakeholders from the community, private and public sectors and implemented through integrated area based Local Development Strategies (LDS). The preparation of the strategy must actively involve the local community and this process is described in the strategy. The Wisbech LDS can be downloaded from the Useful Links section below.
Whilst CLLD funding in the UK is managed through the Department for Work & Pensions (DWP), Cambridgeshire ACRE acts as the Accountable Body for the CLLD programme, responsible for managing and coordinating the LAG and presenting suitable projects received from the community to the LAG for funding decisions. Cambridgeshire ACRE acts as an advisor to both LAG and individual projects in meeting both meeting the LDS objectives as well as ESF funding rules. Through its expertise in community engagement and place-based economic development experience, Cambridgeshire ACRE supports the Wisbech CLLD LAG to address local priorities in an innovative, inclusive and locally specific way.
In total the LAG has £900,000 to distribute which will attract an additional £1.1million in match funding from the community. It aims to work with 1,100 individuals helping a total of 442 either into work or closer to finding a job.
The programme has the support, including a financial contribution, from all levels of local government, Wisbech Town Council, Fenland District Council and Cambridgeshire County Council.
