The Queen's Green Canopy

About the project

Cambridgeshire ACRE has received no specific funding to support this initiative. The work carried out is therefore underpinned by the grant we receive from Defra.

Why is this needed?

The Queen’s Green Canopy (QGC) is a unique tree planting initiative created to mark Her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee in 2022 which invites people from across the United Kingdom to “Plant a Tree for the Jubilee”.

Everyone from individuals to community groups, villages, cities, counties, schools and corporates is being encouraged to play their part to enhance our environment by planting trees during the official planting season between October to March. Tree planting will commence again in October 2022, through to the end of the Jubilee year.

Colleagues at Cambridgeshire County Council are leading efforts to encourage tree planting in Cambridgeshire and Cambridgeshire ACRE has taken a leading role in promoting the QGC to town and parish councils in the County.

Cambridgeshire ACRE delivered an online event in October 2021 to introduce the scheme to local councils and to provide details on how they could get involved including accessing free tress via The Woodland Trust.

How can you get involved?

Anyone can get involved in the project. The best place to find out how is the ‘Get Involved’ page of the Queen’s Green Canopy website

What impact has our work had?

Cambridgeshire ACRE’s strong links to local councils encouraged over 100 people from town and parish councils or community groups to attend the online briefing event. A recording of the event is available to watch via YouTube (see below).

Yaxley Parish Council have enthusiastically taken part in the initiative. The parish clerk, Helen, says:

“Yaxley Parish Council had been looking at replacing some of its tree stock that had been lost due to disease or damage. When we became aware of the QGC, we felt we could tie in planting the replacement trees with Her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee Celebrations.”

“We are lucky to have a Countryside Volunteers Group in Yaxley and they offered their support, a cash donation and help with planting the trees. We placed an order for 22 cherry, hornbeam and apple trees with Barcham Trees of Ely in May 2021 and these were delivered in September. It was really easy to order the trees and Barcham Trees were very helpful.”

“That was the easy bit! The trees were 2 metres in height with a substantial root ball, they certainly were not light in weight. So thought had to be given into how we would plant these trees in the five green spaces that we had identified. A friendly fence company lent us their fence post borer. Tree stakes and straps were sourced from the internet over the summer so come October we were all good to go.”

“The Council’s Grounds Team managed to plant all 22 trees in 7 working days; no mean feat as they still had all their other daily jobs to do. The trees will now be included in our tree stock and will be maintained by the Parish Council and loved by all.”
